Eileen was born in China, raised in Hong Kong and then immigrated to
Canada in 1968. After graduating from the B.C. Institute of Technology
in Nuclear Medicine and Chemistry, Eileen began working in the field of
health. Because she wanted to explore a new aspect of life and something
related to her roots, she began studying Chinese brush painting in 1994,
learning from several master painters throughout the years. Her love of
nature coincides with the beautiful expressions of nature revealed in
this art form. An active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists
since 1998, Eileen has held several solo exhibitions in B.C. and
participated in many juried group shows locally and oversea, which
include the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour 77th
annual juried exhibition in Halifax, and the XVI Collective Painting and
Sculptures Exhibition, Concello de Cangas of Spain in June, 2008. Her
work have received several awards which include First Place at the
Juried Arts 2006 Exhibition of the Surrey Arts Centre. In March, 2010,
her work has been accepted for the City of Richmond’s No. 3 Road Public
Art Project.
Eileen is also an active volunteer for the arts community. She has
served on the Board of the Burnaby Arts Council from 1998 to 2002,
chaired the Burnaby Artwalk and Studio Tour. As a member of the Art
Teacher Association of B.C., Eileen has presented Chinese Watercolour
Workshops in several of the Art Teachers’ Conferences. In 2007, she
ventured as a Children book illustrator: The Dream Jar, published in
2008 by Tutkam Books Inc. of Edmonton, Canada. Having lived in Canada
for most of her life, she enjoys blending of the Western cultures with
this Eastern art form.

Artist’s
Statement
My passion in painting
began with the learning of Chinese brush painting in 1994. My love of
nature coincides with the beautiful expressions of nature revealed in
this artform. The natural beauty of our surroundings and the creative
minds of mankind have since formed a bonding that leads my path.
The uniqueness of this
artform lies with its simple colours, spontaneity, subtle balance of
shape and space which all join to create a visual poetry. The
brushstrokes are analogous to the individual words of an inspiring poem
or the musical phrases in a beautiful piece of music. Its variations in
tone and speed create a rhythmic effect, and its blending of colours
reflects light and shade.
Learning the discipline of
this traditional painting technique has provided me with a good
foundation for exploration. I like to set no boundaries, but go beyond
the traditional focus in my expressions. I enjoy combining other
techniques and medium such as acrylic and encaustic to portray my
present surroundings. Having lived in Canada for over 40 years, my work
is a reflection of the blending this Eastern artform with that of the
West.
